Gardening Jobs in August

July 12th 2024

The final month of summer is here & while we still have time to enjoy the lovely weather, why not get on top of your garden jobs. Here's a list of some of the gardening jobs you can do in the month of August.

Hose Down Your Patio

If you haven't done this job already, why not take some time in august to get your garden floors looking spick & span. At HSS, we have a range of top quality power washers that will get rid of dirt build up on your garden floors in no time. With the wet & miserable weather, foot traffic, pets, parties and much more, your patio floors are bound to get grimy. Compact & powerful, our pressure washers are easy to use & transport. Choose between buying your own pressure washer or hiring from us.

Trim The Hedges

Due to the lovely sunny weather in august, our plants will grow faster than they will in the colder months. Grab your hedge trimmers and give the bushes in your garden a well deserved trim. You'll find other tools you can use to get your hedges looking tidy and smart again, such as loppers, shears & secateurs too.

Tend to your Greenhouse

In our July Gardening Jobs blog, we mentioned about airing out your greenhouse so your plants can get some fresh air. In August, whilst you're continuing to do this task, why not give the floor a good sweep. By keeping leaves and other debris off the floor, you will prevent the spread of fungal diseases and pests. Another august job for your greenhouse is shading. Although the sunshine is great for helping your flowers and plants grow, too much can damage them too. With the weather heating up, putting up blinds or using a shade paint will help block out the sun and stop your greenhouse from overheating on those scorching summer days.

Get Planting

August is a great time to plant some seeds ready for harvesting later in the year. Veggies like rocket, spinach, lettuce, spring onions, cabbage and more can be planted as well as flowers like Forget-Me-Nots, California Poppies & Larkspur. If you're in need of any gardening tools, we have a huge selection for you to choose from.

Lawn Care

If your lawn needs a bit of a trim, give it a fresh cut & make it look tidy again. When you do, raise the blades on your lawn mower so that you don't cut the grass too low. Letting your lawn grow slightly taller helps it to retain moisture which is perfect for the warmer months. If you do find your lawn is turning brown from the hot weather, don't worry! When the rain starts to fall again, it'll go back to be being green again.

Seasonal Jobs

As well as the jobs mentioned in this blog, you'll have some jobs that will need to be done throughout the season.

  • Don't forget to water your plants & lawn during the warmer months
  • Keep removing weeds as & when they pop up
  • Look out for pests that might destroy your lawn, flowers and plants
  • Top up bird baths with fresh water

But don't forget to enjoy all of your hard work! Grab your new book, get the BBQ out or just soak in some much needed vitamin D in your gorgeous garden (created by you!).
