How to Keep Your Garden Protected in Wet Weather

August 12th 2024

When the inevitable British wet weather arrives and wreaks havoc on our gardens, our precious plants and flowers are going to need saving, but do we actually know how to protect them?

In this blog we will discuss how to keep your garden protected in wet weather and what tools & accessories you'll need.

Tarpaulin

These heavy duty, waterproof covers are great for protecting your plants from rain. Too much rain can cause waterlogging with plants but putting up a tarpaulin over can help prevent that from happening.

Tarpaulin's can also be used to cover and protect garden furniture, BBQ's, garden tools, crops and a variety of things that you have in your garden that could get damaged in the rain.

Sturdy and tear resistant, tarpaulins can withstand other weather conditions such as snow, high winds and even the sun.

Check out our range of tarpaulin here.

Mulch

We all know that when it rains in the UK, it pours! And when it does, our plants can get flooded and die. Adding mulch to your plants soil can help with that. Mulch can act like a sponge and soak up any excess water and lets it seep in to the soil slowly. Using a heavier mulch means it can absorb and hold more water and won't be able to wash away like lighter mulches.

Buy some responsibly sourced mulch online today.

Timber & Power Tools

As well as plants, you may have other things in your garden that you'll want to keep away from the rain such as

  • Garden furniture
  • Hot tubs
  • BBQs

and as much as you would like to, you can't pick those up and bring them indoors every time it rains! So why not build a gazebo? These free standing structures will provide your outdoor belongings with shelter in the bad weather and you won't have to worry about anything getting ruined.

You'll find all you need to build your dream gazebo at HSS, from different timber & joinery materials, to a variety of power tools like saws, cordless drills screwdrivers and wrenches.

Leaf Blower

Once the weather has settled down after the wind and pour downs, you may find a fair amount of leaves in your garden. Don't waste time sweeping them! Hire or buy a leaf blower instead. Leaf blowers are a convenient of equipment that can gather leaves, twigs, dirt and other debris quickly. Not only do leaf blowers save you time, they are easy to operate & give you access to places you may find hard to reach. You can use them in your gardens, as well as your pavements, driveway and other outdoor spaces that need a quick clean up.

Gutters

Just like your homes, garden sheds need a good guttering system too. Having gutters around your shed or garage means that rain water is prevented from going down the sides and causing rotting or structural damage.

If you already have guttering around your garden buildings, check it's condition and if you can see any wear and tear, it might be worth replacing.

Waterproof Clothing

Garden projects can take time and unfortunately, we can't stop the rain from coming!

No one wants to get soaked whilst working. Buy yourself a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers and some wellies and keep your garden projects on track despite the wet weather.
