January Gardening Jobs

December 12th 2023

January marks the start of a new year and there's no better time to sort your garden out. Here are some jobs you can do in January to get your garden ready to flourish in the upcoming warmer months.

Gardening Jobs

Clean Bird Feeders - Wildlife is all around us and if you have a garden, you might find you have some little visitors from time to time. If you have a bird feeder, be sure to give it a good clean and top it up with fresh food & water so that any birds passing through can stay sustained during the colder months.

Clear & Refill Your Paths - January is a good time to get weeding. All types of weeds will pop up around your garden and around your paths as well as overgrown grass. Pull out your garden tools and use them to de-weed or dig up any greenery that has grown over or on your path. When you've finished pulling up the unwanted greenery from your path, why not take this time to refill any gravel, wood chips, bark or other materials on your path that may have been blown away during the colder months. If you need some garden hand tools to help you with this, take a look at look at our range here.

Tidy Debris - During the winter months, everything from leaves, branches & rubbish accumulates in our gardens. Grab a rake or a broom, gather all your rubbish together to put it in a black bag or straight into your garden waste bin. If you've got a lawn in your garden, you can also scarify it to loosen any built up moss to promote healthy growth. At HSS, we have a selection of garden rakes, & brooms to buy online.

Clear Your Gutters - Another thing in your garden that get's clogged up is your gutters. Blocked gutters stop the flow of water and cause it to back up which can cause water damage and other issues. Get yourself some safe and suitable ladders that will help you reach your gutters and remove whatever is causing the blockage.

Whetstones, files, sharpening steels & diamond coated sharpening tools can help you get your forks, hoppers, hedge trimmers, sheers, spades & pruners sharp enough to get your jobs done. Don't have any sharpening tools? We've got you covered. Take a look at the sharpening tools we have available to buy here.

Winter Digging - This is really important to get your soil ready for the spring. By doing this you allows air & water to help cultivate to prepare it for planting & other gardening jobs in the Spring. We have a range of digging & cultivating tools for you to choose from.

Sort Out Hedges & Shrubs - To help encourage healthy growth of your hedges and shrubs, sprinkle all-purpose fertiliser around the base of your hedges and shrubs and watch them flourish over time.
