Prepare Your Garden for Spring

January 8th 2024

After the wet winter months, your garden is going to need some well needed TLC in time for the warmer seasons. Here's a few tips on how to prepare your garden for spring.

Tidy up Flower Beds

All the rain & blustery winds may have ruined your flower beds during autumn & winter so take this time to give them a bit of a tidy up. Remove any weeds, dead leaves & other debris and get the soil ready to sow bulbs & seeds so they can flourish in the upcoming months. At HSS, we have a selection of garden hand tools & digging tools that you can buy to help you with your garden tidy up.

Clean Out Your Greenhouse

If you're lucky enough to have a greenhouse in your garden, take this time to clean it out so you can enjoy planting fruit, veggies and flowers for the rest of the year. Brush or vacuum all the soil and other debris on the floors, wipe down shelves & tables & check your water butts/tanks. Over time, algae can grow on the water or it can turn colour & even start smelling so make sure you clean it out your water butts/tanks can keep water fresher for longer. Check out our brooms, wipes & cleaning sprays that can help you with your cleaning.

Pressure Wash Your Decking

Maintaining your decking is really important. Over the year, it'll get dirty and need washing. Not only will it need washing but it may need treating, staining & oiling too so you can keep it looking its best as well as keeping the wood in a good condition so it doesn't rot. You can find all our decking stains, preservers & treatments here. Getting your decking clean & painted in the spring means that when summer comes around, you can start enjoy soaking up the sunshine straightaway. Whether you need to hire or buy a pressure washer, HSS will have what you need. Our range of pressure washers are from well-known brands such as Dewalt, Karcher, Nilfisk Alto & more.

Look After Garden Furniture, Fences, Gates & Trellises

Just like your decking, your garden furniture, fences, gates & trellises will need looking after too. Weathering can damage all of these things in your garden so before the hotter weather beings and you find yourself out in the garden again, take some time to look for any repairs. Things like tightening loose screws, treating & re-painting & wiping down dirt and grime make a huge difference. Why not wash any cushions & other soft furnishings that are kept outside too so they can be fresh in time for the upcoming BBQ's.

Check Your Gutters

Over the autumn and winter months, fallen leaves and twigs can land in our gutters causing them to block. When the rain falls, it'll have no where to go and cascade out of the gutters instead of flowing through the system to the drains. Blocked gutters could also cause water damage to your property. If you're able to do so, check and clean out your gutters yourself or hire someone in the trade to do it for you.

Take Care of Your Lawn

The springtime will be the best time to give your lawn it's first cut of the new year. Not only will it need cutting but it will also need other things to help it flourish over the upcoming months. Aerating, cutting the edges with a spade, raking & using fertiliser all contribute to your lawn's health ensuring it grows strong & healthy in time for the warmer weather.
